Core and Satellite

The portfolio seeks to provide absolute returns in all market environments. A top down approach is employed to select asset classes and investment themes. A bottom up analysis is used to determine individual securities. The model takes a rigorous approach to risk management.
The model uses a core/satellite approach. The core holdings are expected to be longer term holdings with relatively low turnover. The satellite holdings may turn over more quickly as the environment warrants. The process starts by defining what themes, asset classes and regions are likely to produce positive returns. Once a framework has been defined, assets are selected to maximize the exposure to each theme.
For individual securities, I employ fundamental analysis. I look for companies that are cash flow positive and have strong growth prospects or the ability to improve margins. For ETFs, I make sure that the asset is constructed without undue risk concentrations. In all cases, original SEC filings are used as the basis for understanding the investment. Idea generation is driven by financial publications, media and other portfolios.
The portfolio does not maintain a fully invested status at all times. When it is fully invested, it will generally have 12-20 holdings. The portfolio is not rebalanced according to a schedule, which could lead to significant weight disparities among positions. In general, however, no particular position will be allowed to exceed more than 10% of the overall portfolio.
The manager will sell a position when one of the following situations occur: 1) an investment thesis has been broken or disproved, 2) a target price has been reached, or 3) a more attractive investment is found. The portfolio also tries to maintain tax efficiency and may sell a position in order to harvest losses.
