  • Analysis: Life Partners Holdings, pt. 2 July 01, 2009

It's rare to see a widely available research report have a large tangible effect on any particular stock but Citron Research's expose on Life Partners Holdings (LPHI) seems to have scared a great deal of people. I have minor long positions in LPHI so I read Citron's report (link) with interest.

The report is well structured and easy to read but I'll summarize a bit further here. Their main complaints are:

    1. Unsustainable high fees - ~14% gross total for the seller of the life insurance policy

  • Thoughts: Red June 22, 2009

With the customizable Google homepage, I have my stock watchlist and its updated performance in front of me everytime I open my browser. Lately, my entire portfolio has been red, and I'm liking it. I'm looking at PriceSmart, in particular, which I'm still in the process of making a strong investment decision on. The lower the price goes while I still don't have a substantial stake, the cheaper my cost-basis is going to be.

Most of PSMT's stores are in the Carribean or Central America. There are a lot of qualitative issues which I'm still a bit concerned about, a list of which I'll include later. But first, take a look at the juicy numbers: 3% profit margin (enormous for a wholesale retail outfit; for comparison, Wal-Mart's is......

  • Thoughts: Market valuation June 15, 2009

Ran across this very interesting tool today: Morningstar's Market Valuation Graph. I'm not really one to look at overall market valuation, but apparently they are using full-on DCF analyses to determine a marketwide fair value. And it looks like they're doing it the right way--by tracking every stock on the NYSE and NASDAQ (over 5,800 of them).

I can't say much for previous periods, but what they are saying for the current market situation (very slightly undervalued, bordering on fairly valued)......
