    The price of oil may go up, down and sideways for quite a long period of time. But regardless, it will most likely stay above $50 per barrel for the rest of our lives. At that price or above it is the oil companies best interests to keep exploring for oil. Thus, the earnings growth prospects for oil services companies is a lot more attractive, and stable, then the profits of oil producers. WHQ is my favorite play in the field. PDE is another good one.   • Still some play in Gold September 01, 2007

    I bought 2 gold stock mutual funds back in 2002 and through end of 2005 enjoyed about a 300%+ gain. So why am I still holding on? I have sold about 50% of the position to pocket some gains. But I still think that the dollar is overvalued and owning gold is one of the best ways to counteract that. It may seem that my gold position is too large for this portfolio.   • Why short the Russell? September 01, 2007

    I put this trade in a couple days ago and am down about 2%. I have to admit that timing the market is not my forte, but I believe the market needs to retest the lows established earlier in August. If it does, then I will cover for about 7% gain. If the market runs up another 5-6% then I will close out. For me this was just a hedge against a lot of the small cap positions in the portfolio during this volatile spot in the market.
