Intuitive yet non-obvious advice from Aleph Blog March 30, 2010
An axiom that I've heard many times since I started investing is that equity investors should watch debt markets just as closely as stock markets. I honestly don't know if it's possible for me, as a small-time individual investor, to get decent information on bond markets, and if it's possible I have no idea of how to do it. Despite this, I was intrigued by this article from The Aleph Blog (HT Abnormal Returns) and thought I'd pass it along to everyone here.

... uhoh March 23, 2010
One of my strongest memories from my first month of investing/trading is a blog post that I sadly haven't been able to find again. (it was linked to on Abnormal Returns though) It was a post about death crosses came out sometime around the middle of August 2008, and expressed great concern that the market was in the process of going through one. Every time I remember that post I have a pang of "why didn't I listen?!?" regret.
For those of you who aren't familiar, a death cross is when a......

Haven't posted in a while March 22, 2010
First thing's first: my portfolio hasn't been updating properly. I sold GPC two days ago for a nice short term gain, and I set a reasonably tight stop on RCL, so it was covered at 28.11.
On the subject of RCL, every trader worth his/her salt says that tight stops are a very important part of trading, and after this experience I'm inclined to agree with them. In the past I had sometimes avoided setting stops because transaction costs are significant for someone with a portfolio as small as......

James Altucher's 10 Stocks for 2010 December 10, 2009
I came across this article today via Abnormal Returns and thought I'd share it. At first glance it appears to be just another "ideas for next year" list, but Mr. Altucher has found some interesting mid-caps that I, for one, have never really investigated before. You won't find AAPL, JPM or QCOM on this list, and that's why I like it.
