Joseph Mjelde

Individual Investor

Joseph has been in active duty military for 22 years and has been continually learning about investing through personal study over the last 20 years or so.

Investment style

Joseph's investment style is bottom-up, using fundamental analysis to find the best performing companies in an industry. He concentrates on fundamentals (revenue/earnings/cash flow/book value growth) and macroeconomics in an attempt to profit from emerging trends.

How I got started

Having started investing 20 years ago, Joe's early investing experiences consisted of writing covered call options on investments to produce income and reduce downside risk. While this resulted in extra income, his upside was limited as well. Over the years, he's eliminated the use of margin, refined his fundamental analysis skills, and developed the discipline of consistency. The approach he uses entails an investment of a set dollar amount each month in the same 20 well researched companies. Whether the market is up or down, he makes the purchase, knowing that if the price is low, he's simply getting better value and more shares.

Personal Interests

Off duty, Joseph enjoys spending time with my kids, bible study, studying Korean, fishing, swimming, and running. He's also interested in learning how to scuba dive. When vacation time comes around, he enjoys going to Virginia Beach, sightseeing around Washington, DC, and going to our favorite places in Florida.
