NS - Speculative Nat. Gas play July 28, 2008
This initial position is to prepare for Nat. Gas season which I've been following for the past 5 years or so. I was looking for exposure to commodities in general and though indirect, I like the prospects of pipelines and transport, as oil/gas are extracted from more remote locations. The attractive yield and price to book made this a bargain I couldn't pass up. I'll look to add to the position during temporary pullbacks in oil prices that don't add much downside to the price of the......

RBS - Value play and dollar hedge July 28, 2008
I needed to initiate a position in a foreign bank to fufill my diversification requirements and I selected RBS largely as a discount play and for exposure to Europe. I feel like the UK's distance from the regulations of the EU can help it slightly outperform or at least provide stability for a small portion of the portfolio. At these prices, the high dividend yield will be reinvested for maximum gain. I feel like overseas banks will have an easier time recovering than domestic banks and I'll......

ED - The electric company... July 28, 2008
I needed a utility and this seems to be trading at steep discount. I like the dividend regularity and current yield, I'm not worried about ED's ability to raise rates when necessary and the Fed, State, County, City, Borrough, etc. goverment's infinate ability to bail out ED in light of their essential services.
I'll be reinvesting the dividends to this one for eternity and will continue to pick up shares whenever they are available on the cheap.

WM - Bond interest swap @ discount July 28, 2008
So I hold a number of WaMu bonds that I purchased at steep discount, they will mature on Jan 15, 2009 with a profit of about 3% of the total portfolio. Originally I had intended to use these funds for the annual 3% portfolio distribution, but I'm more convinced of the relative stability of WM to double down my bet on their bonds.
Through use of the (almost junk) bonds that are currently distressed, I've locked in a 3% total portfolio profit on 1/15/09, as long as WaMu hasn't defaulted by......
