Short term bet July 04, 2008
I play the market to buy and hold - which explains my horrible returns this year.
But crude seems awfully high. I have seen some smart people betting against that market. Is there an opportunity to play a 10 - 20% drop in the price of crude, back down to $130 / barrel?
HOD could provide 30 - 40% gains on such a drop.
What is the logic for oil to drop - beyond the bubble popping? Potential downward influences on NYMEX crude: stronger dollar, end of summer driving season, political action against......

Chinese solar April 26, 2008
Quick and dirty rationale - risky but perhaps interesting; could continue to be a momentum play, or could be a medium to long term holding. Track these two, which seem to be best in class, and see where they head up to and past Olympics. China second in world photo voltaic production; significant government subsidies for R&D. Development of strong domestic market and perhaps US market key to these companies medium-term growth. Further research on Chinese domestic growth for solar needed. Track......

I need to think about what sectors I am representing through funds and ETFs. I don't have time to do as good a job as I would like picking stocks. I have to rely on second hand research for valuations. I do have the time to think through what sectors make up my portfolio, and to make sure my risk is balanced across these sectors and within my holdings. Do I need a commodities fund? Do I get into financials? How much do I want to weight index trackers? Get this right first....
