The American Heroes portfolio uses proprietary methodology to determine and rank "American Hero Companies.” We at American Values Investments also perform additional fundamental analysis on our potential investments before making any decisions. Our portfolio typically holds about two dozen stocks that are diversified across sectors.
We use fundamental analysis to determine what we believe to be a company’s underlying value. Next, we look at a company’s long-term track record including its three, five, and ten year total returns. Our research then attempts to evaluate management efficiency based on such factors as return on equity, gross margins and income growth.
We also try to evaluate the economic value of a company’s current and potential holdings using fundamental criteria.
We use a proprietary research methodology to determine which companies are “American Hero Companies” and are eligible for investment. Our research focuses on the areas of integrity, humility, diligence, and caring. Investment merit is determined by using research from Argus, Standard & Poor’s, and Morningstar.
The American Heroes portfolio typically has 24 holdings in at least seven different industry sectors. We usually equally weight each holding and rebalance the portfolio annually. A single sector tends not to have a concentration more than twice what that same sector has within the S&P 500 stock index. Each sector usually has a concentration of at least half what it has within the S&P 500.
We remove stocks from the portfolio if they lose their “American Hero” status, or if another “Hero” has more compelling investment merit. We also may sell stocks if we choose to reduce exposure to a particular sector. We review the investment merit of all of our holdings on a monthly basis.

Performance of the portfolio manager's account is calculated by Covestor on a daily time-weighted basis, including cash, dividends and earnings distributions and broker commissions. Manager returns include trades and positions that fail Covestor's trading rules, as a result, actual client returns will differ. Covestor advisory fees are simulated and applied retro-actively to present the portfolio return "net-of-fees".
Average client returns are calculated by Covestor and are composed of the average, time-weighted returns of all active client investments (some of which may contain investment restrictions) to the underlying portfolio. These daily average returns are then linked together for the timeframe presented. These returns include cash, dividends, earnings distributions, brokerage commissions and Covestor advisory fees.
All graph data is as of the end of day for the referenced period, unless otherwise specified. The investment minimum is the minimum investment required to follow a particular portfolio. The minimum amount is determined by Covestor, based on the characteristics of the underlying portfolio. It should not be considered as specific investment advice for your investment situation.
